CHRISTIAN
EPIGRAPHY Early
Christian Epitaphs & Inscriptions &
History of their Preservation (Paperback - 16 Mar 2011) Christian epigraphy is an overview
of events that affected the establishment of the early Church. Ecclesiastical
history is evidenced by the inclusion of early examples of epitaphs of people
from all walks of life, from Consuls, Families and Church dignitaries Emphasis is placed on the work of
De Rossi and his immense contribution to society by the preservation of
historic material, recovered from his consistent quest as he searched early archives, libraries, and
ecclesiastical archives. His extraordinary knowledge of obscure monuments and
familiarity with aged manuscripts has preserved for us a rare opportunity to
view a primitive era of the early Church and the plight of the early
Christians in the Catacombs of Rome. The period covered within these
pages extends from the ancient pagan life of Rome, and of the early Christian
era and up until the Middle Ages. The book also describes the enigma of Pope Damasus (after the death of Liberius ) and witnesses
his success in overcoming discords
that troubled the early Church
and his special care to protect the sanctuaries of the martyrs and of
his restoration of their tombs, which
indicates to us that he was a conscientious historian and a person who had
diligently studied the traditions of the Church of Rome. His metrical
panegyrics have preserved many precious pages of the history of the
persecutions, which without his special care to preserve them, would have
been lost forever. This book
continues with an overview of secular epigraphy .The status of individuals,
slaves and freedmen and social classes of Ancient Rome, together with an
in-depth summary of De Rossi’s “Summary of Christian Transcriptions” which
contains numerous sepulchral Roman and Greek inscriptions devoted to the cult
of Saints together with “Sanctis” and “Martyr” and Greek inscriptions from
several different geographical last repositories of early Christians...
Also is included is a list of the names of Consuls
appearing on Christian inscriptions and other inscriptions from the fourth to
sixth century AD, also examples of ancient graffiti discovered from the walls
within the Roman catacombs and lists containing the names of martyrs. |
